We live in austere times in schools. Every funding cut matters, whilst accessing potential funding becomes more important than ever. And yet, in the busy hubbub of the school year, many school leaders can miss the opportunity to access available funding simply by being unaware of its existence, or simply not having the knowledge and tools to make successful bids.
In every profession and line of business, bigger organisations – with extra capacity to seek out funding and write skillful bids – can too often hoover up the available funding. Experienced bid writers can be tasked with writing savvy bids, with schools buffeted by windy break-times and ever-changing curriculums, lacking the capacity to innovate and access the requisite funding for piloting their work.
This Friday (20th of October), at the Berrick Saul building at York University, in partnership with Huntington Research School and the IEE, Tom Martell, from the Education Endowment Foundation, and myself, from Huntington Research School and the EEF, will lead a session on ‘Improving Funding Bids with Evidence’ to help every school leader to access the crucial information for making successful funding bids.
Do you know your ‘process evaluation‘ from your ‘outcome evaluation‘? Have you considered how valid and reliable each assessment tool you are deploying? Do you have a ‘theory of change‘ or do you prefer a ‘logic model‘? Sometimes it is the unique language of research evidence that proves a barrier to busy school leaders. We needn’t be bamboozled by research methods, nor fancy terminology, with a little support to use the common language of evidence-based project design.
Another crucial matter for schools is locating appropriate funding: what we call the ‘Funding Pipeline‘.
The Funding Pipeline
There are numerous sources for schools to access funding, if you know where to look and what type of project you are looking to undertake.
EEF/IEE Research Schools have been supporting an excellent gateway to school funding for evidence-based projects with the IEE Innovation Evaluation Grants. Find out a little more HERE. The ‘Call for Applications‘ document is HERE. The potential here to develop a smaller scale pilot helps schools to get a vital pathway into the ‘pipeline’.
Then there is the larger, more specific ‘Strategic School Improvement Funding’ (SSIF) from the DfE. You can find the EEF support resources HERE, but there is much more to say about how you can more effectively design a well-designed bid.
Further down the pipeline, schools can develop their pilots and given ‘signs of promise’, they can look to making an application for a project with the Education Endowment Foundation – see the latest rounds of applications HERE. Applications may be prioritized around projects related to Maths at KS2/3, Behaviour interventions, Leadership programmes, but also, more broadly, any project that improves outcomes for disadvantaged students.
